Senior Citizens of Valencia City Joins Elderly Week Celebration

Recognizing the importance of the elderly and their roles in the community, the City Government of Valencia through the City Social Welfare and Development Office together with the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs spearheaded the Elderly Week Celebration with the theme, “Igalang ang mga Nakakatanda at ang Kanilang mga Karapatan,” on October 7, 2015 at the City Gymnasium.

The one-day celebration started with a program attended by the 31 Senior Citizens Associations of Valencia City headed by their respective Presidents.

Mr. Nicanor S. Agdon, the Federation President gave the Welcome Address and Ms. Alejandra B. Quiñones, the OSCA Administrator presented the delegates from different barangays.

The occasion was graced by the City Mayor Hon. Azucena P. Huervas and the City Vice Mayor Hon. Rolando P. Laviña together with City Councilor Hon. Eduardo D. Chan, Chairman on Committee on Senior Citizens.

The guest speaker of the event is Mr. Gustavo Neri, the Vice President of Senior Citizens in Region X who talks about the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 or Republic Act 9994. He emphasized the provisions of the constitution in recognizing the rights of the senior citizens in taking their proper place in the society.

He also calls on the Local Chief Executive to continue supporting the social pensions for the elders. He also recognized the City Government of Valencia and the City Officials for taking time to give love and support to the elders especially on Elderly Week Celebration.

Meanwhile, the City Mayor Hon. Azucena P. Huervas, during her message, acknowledged the elders of Valencia for attending the occasion. The Honorable Mayor pledged to allocate additional funds in the 2016 budget for the elders of Valencia.

“We cannot control time nor ageing, and all of us are getting there,” Mayor Huervas added. “I am requesting the City Vice Mayor Hon. Rolando P. Laviña and the City Councilors to increase the allocations for the elders and let us continue to think of valuable programs for the Senior Citizens of Valencia City.”

Hon. Eduardo D. Chan, the Chairperson of the Committee on Senior Citizens also requested the Local Chief Executive to add more funds to the Senior Citizens on the budget hearing and reiterated the mandate that elders should be given full support for the improvement of the their total well-being, also for their full participation in society.
