Drought-affected Farmers in Valencia City Receive Free Seeds and Fertilizer Assistance

The Provincial Government of Bukidnon headed by the Provincial Governor Hon. Jose Ma. R. Zubiri, Jr., together with the City Government of Valencia facilitated the distribution of seeds and fertilizer assistance to the affected farmers from the 31 barangays of the city on September 21, 2015 at the city gymnasium.

The giving of assistance is part of the government’s plan to help farmers who are affected from the drought that hit the whole province on May 2015. This is also in response to the needs of the farmers who have been experiencing the continued effect of the long dry spell.

It was recorded by the Provincial Agriculture Office that there are 15,574 affected farmers in the entire Province of Bukidnon and 1,120 of them are from Valencia City. With the total number of affected farmers here, only 607 beneficiaries were able to enlist their names at the City Agriculture Office to receive the assistance.

Provincial Governor Hon. Jose Ma. Zubiri Jr., clarified and assured that those who are not on the list can still avail the free assistance. "We will go over and validate our list so that all of those affected by drought will receive such benefits from the government," Hon. Zubiri said.

The beneficiaries can avail a sack of corn seeds and one to two sacks of fertilizer per farmer with affected area of one hectare. The governor also highlighted the variety of the seedlings as it comes from India which was known for having the second best corn production in the world. The farmers were also oriented on the planting procedures of the said corn seeds.

Meanwhile, the City Government of Valencia, headed by the City Mayor Hon. Azucena P. Huervas together with the City Agriculture Office headed by Acting City Agriculture Officer, Connie L. Dalangan has been also making programs and projects that support the needs of the farmers.

Considering that farming is one of the main sources of livelihood in Valencia City, the giving of such assistance is one of the alternative ways to help them recover.

In behalf of the people of Valencia, Mayor Azucena P. Huervas expressed her gratitude to the Provincial Governor and to the Provincial Agriculture Office for the support and participation in helping the farmers of Valencia, as well as the people of Bukidnon.

The Honorable Mayor was grateful for the initiative of the Provincial Government to extend their services by providing free seeds and fertilizers to the farmers.

The giving of free seeds and fertilizers will continue in the upcoming days in different affected areas in the province.
