City Nutrition Office Conducted Diabetes Symposium
July 7, 2015: As part of the celebration of the 41st Nutrition Month 2015 with the theme, “Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo,’’ the City Government of Valencia through the City Nutrition Office conducted a Diabetes Symposium at the City Hall Covered Court which was attended by the City Government Employees, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, City Nutrition Committee Members and Barangay Officials.
The invited guest speaker is Dr. Rhodora F. Cabunilas, MD, FPCP, FPSD who discussed Diabetes Mellitus: Understanding Diabetes and Its Complications. Dr. Cabunilas emphasized that diabetes is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects your body's ability to use the energy found in food, and it is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels. There are three major types of diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes. Further, Dr. Cabunilas added that diabetes is so common in the Philippines and it is a growing threat to our nation’s health and if symptoms are already present, like frequent urination, getting thirsty always and abrupt weight loss, there is a great chance of having diabetes so better consult a physician.
The City Nutrition Office has nutritionists who could assist in weight management and could prepare meal plans for specific age group and they can also help compute the ideal body weight of a person depending on height and age. Also, the City Nutrition Office has the Biggest Loser Season 4 which is open to all constituents of Valencia City (20-60 yrs. Old.)
