Valencia City AIDS Council Spearheads World AIDS Day Celebration

The City Government of Valencia through the Valencia City AIDS Council together with Kaabag Valencia AIDS Prevention and Control Advocates (KAVAPCA) spearheaded the observance of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2016 with the theme, “HANDS UP #HIVPREVENTION.”

The activity started with a motorcade around the city at 2:00PM with stop overs in every Awareness Station as dancers from DepEd, HATAW headed by Ms. Lolita L. Garcia, Youth Groups and Entertainment Establishment Workers performed their dance presentation as leaflets are being distributed to the viewers.

A program then followed at the City Public Market at 3:00PM which was participated by the different departments of the city together with the local stakeholders, partner agencies and hospitals.

In his Opening Remarks, Dr. Juniver G. Flores, M.D., Medical Officer IV and the Program Coordinator of Reproductive Health and Wellness Center of the City Health Office, emphasized the importance of promoting value formation and awareness of this deadly disease in the City of Valencia.

Mr. Michael Jesus A. Mahinay, Project Coordinator of ALAGAD Mindanao Inc. gave the rationale of the activity and highlighted the importance of the observance of World AIDS Day. He also gave the latest updates on HIV and AIDS.

Mahinay also emphasized the theme, “Hands up for #HIVprevention” which campaigns to explore different aspects of HIV prevention and how they relate to specific groups of people, key populations and people living with HIV.

A special guest also attended the program and brought the crowd to tears as he narrated his life story and journey on how he became a person living with HIV.

Mr. Abe P. Gillaco, MPA, CGDH-HRMO who represented the City Mayor, in his message, thanked the City AIDS Council chaired by the City Mayor Hon. Azucena P. Huervas, City Councilor on Health Hon. Policarpo P. Nurillo IV, MD, City Health Officer Dr. Marlyn V. Agbayani, Dr. Juniver G. Flores together with the members of the City AIDS Council and KAVAPCA (Kaabag Valencia AIDS Prevention and Control Advocates for spearheading the activity. He also emphasized the strong support of the Local Chief Executive in all endeavors of the Council as Mayor Huervas is the first mayor to convene the council.

Ms. Maricar Q. Buyan, RN KAVAPCA (Kaabag Valencia AIDS Prevention and Control Advocates) President, in her closing remarks, thanked all the stakeholders for joining the activity.

As stipulated in our City Ordinance No. 42-2011, “AIDS is a disease that recognizes no territorial, social and economic boundaries for which there is no known cure. The gravity of AIDS threat today demands strong state action, thus the City Government of Valencia shall actively promote public awareness on the causes, modes of transmission, consequences, means of prevention and control of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) through comprehensive, city-wide educational and information campaign, organized by the local government down to the barangay level.”

Valencia City AIDS Council joins the annual celebration of World AIDS Day every December 1 of every year.
