Valencia City Conducts Free Cervical and Breast Cancer Screening

In continuation of the celebration of the National Women's Month, the City Mayor’s Office together with the City Social Welfare and Development office successfully conducted a free cervical and breast cancer screening program on March 17, 2016 at the City Hall Covered Court and ABC Hall.

The program aimed to promote early detection and prevention of cervical and breast cancer among women employees and functionaries of Valencia City.

Report shows that cervical and breast cancer is the leading cancer killer among women worldwide. Cancer refers to diseases in which abnormal cells divide out of control and are able to invade other tissues.

During the program, Dr. Efren Domiciano C. Villahermosa Jr., General Surgeon, discussed about breast cancer and its early detection.

"I am encouraging all women to conduct self-examination of their breasts to early detect breast cancer," Villahermosa said as he further discussed the risks and proper ways of breast self-exam.

Dr. Villahermosa also stated that cancer is not caused by stress or injury to the breast but instead it is due to some factors that increase the risk of having the disease such as getting older, personal and family history of breast cancer, and unhealthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, City Councilor Helen T. Bernal welcomed the women participants and encouraged them to actively participate and always take good care of their health.

The City Government headed by Mayor Azucena P. Huervas, will always continue to provide programs and services that will benefit the women employees and functionaries of Valencia City.

The program was also made possible through the support and help of the Obstetrician-Gynecologists in the city with Dr. Diana Tecson, Dr. Cosette Galve, Dr. Dinah G. Abella, Dr. Marydee Latayan, and Dr. Bernadette Nery.
