Valencia City Celebrates Women’s Month 2016

To recognize and highlight women’s key roles in the city who passionately led to improve women’s advocacies in the society, the City Government of Valencia through the Office of the City Mayor together with the City Social Welfare and Development Office spearhead this year’s Women’s Month Celebration with the theme, "Kapakanan ni Juana, Isama sa Agenda!" on March 2, 2016.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No.224, 227 and Republic Act No. 6469 declaring first week of March as Women’s Week, March 8 as National Women’s Day, and providing for the observance of the month of March as “Women’s Role in History Month.”

The objectives of this year’s month-long celebration stands to recognize and highlight women’s key roles and accomplishments in leadership, power and decision-making, increase awareness on engaging women to participate at all levels of policy and decision-making, share strategies and best practices women have employed to become successful women leaders and empower women.

The opening program started with a motorcade around the city at 7:00 AM and was joined by all female employees of the city, PNP, Barangay Officials and functionaries, partner organizations and agencies. A mass dance then followed led by Gabriella to the tune of “Isang Bilyong Babae ang Babangon” - ONE BILLION RISING a campaign to end violence against women and children.

City Councilor Hon. Helen T. Bernal, Chairperson of the Committee on Women and Children in her message she emphasized that men and women are equal and that women have equal roles in leadership and decision-making.

“The City Government is headed by a woman and we have many women leaders in our city. We will continue to strengthen our roles in our society by reaching out to all women in the city,” she added.

Ms. Evangelista S. Cuzon, Social Welfare Officer IV of CSWDO thanked the City Government for spearheading a memorable event for the women in the city. She also said that women are already protected by law since the Magna Carta for Women or Republic Act 9710 was approved last 2009.

“Women now have a role in nation-building and we are aiming that women would be free from any form of abuse and discrimination,” she added.

Meanwhile, City Mayor Hon. Azucena P. Huervas in her message she thanked all the participants and emphasized that March is the month for women.

“The City Government recognizes the roles of women in our society, and we will strive to support all women sectors by providing livelihood programs that could help alleviate poverty. We also condemn discrimination and abuse in all forms and women should stand and lead. Together, let us say, BABANGON TAYO! (We will rise!)”

After the program free services for women were offered at the City Hall Covered Court. Around 500 women employees availed free haircut, massage, manicure and pedicure.

During the month-long celebration, the city government will spearhead an Awards Night for Women Leaders on March 22, 2016 and selected women leaders and heads of offices together with the City Social Welfare and Development Office and PNP Women and Children Protection Desk will be joining the whole Province of Bukidnon during the Provincial Women Summit set on March 29, 2016.
