Valencia City Conducted Training
of Trainers for Infant and Young Child Feeding

The City Nutrition Office of Valencia successfully conducted a training seminar for peer counselors on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) program of the government from February 22 to 24, 2016 at CAP Auditorium, Valencia City, Bukidnon.

The 3-day seminar aimed to strengthen the peer counselors from different barangays to effectively provide support either to individuals or groups of pregnant women, and mothers with children 0-2 years old in the city.

According to Ms. Beverly G. Mangubat, Nutrition Program Coordinator of Valencia City, IYCF is a national program that aimed to reduce child mortality and morbidity through optimal feeding of infants and young children.

"The seminar will help our peer counselors which composed of barangay officials, barangay health workers, and volunteer mothers to gain new knowledge on the ways of giving nutrition and feeding practices for the young children," Mangubat added.

The City Nutrition Office, headed by City Nutrition Action Officer Ms. Hazel P. Dondonayos, RND, believed that such program will help improve child survival and promote healthy growth and development.

To effectively train the community mobilizers and peer counselors in the city, the City Nutrition Office invited speakers who will help train the trainers for IYCF.

Ms. Princess Christine G. Daliva, Nutrition Officer I of National Nutrition Council Region X, discussed the importance of the program and on how it will reduces the risk of chronic diseases and foster better development among young children.

"We are training the trainers for them to effectively feed our babies or infants," Daliva said.

Ms. Raquel Buere, Nutrition Program Coordinator of Naga City, also discussed the different ways of proper breast feeding and the common situations that can affect the infant and young child feeding.

“Breast-feeding has all the nutrients that will help children grow and protect them against any illnesses and diseases,” Buere said.

Ms. Buere was invited to be one of the guest speakers as Naga City was known for its reputation for being a model local government unit for its strong implementation of IYCF and five years of maintenance as Hall of Famer for nutrition award.

The city government of Valencia headed by City Mayor Azucena P. Huervas also the Chairperson of the City Nutrition Committee, has a strong advocacy on strengthening the nutrition programs of the city.
