Valencia City celebrates World Diabetes Day

The Valencia City Health Office headed by City Health Officer Marlyn V. Agbayani M.D., spearheaded the city-wide diabetes congress in celebration of the annual observance of World Diabetes Day with the theme "Healthy Eating Begins with Breakfast" on November 10, 2015 at the city covered court.

The key message of the event aims to raise awareness about diabetes and on how to prevent such disease.

According to Dr. Michael Escalante, MD, Non-Com Physician Coordinator, diabetes is now a world wide concern and that people should be aware about it. He added that awareness is the first step of finding the solution for the disease.

City Councilor Hon. Policarpo P. Murillo IV, MD also clarified that the event is not a celebration for people living with diabetes instead it is a celebration that serves as an education program to help inform the people about diabetes.

Hon. Murillo also highlighted the importance of eating breakfast as it prevents high incidence of diabetes. He also encourages everyone to join the City Diabetic Club for a comprehensive management of the disease.

Furthermore, several talks about healthy breakfast and ways to prevent diabetes were also discussed during the celebration.

Diabetic educator Mr. Ted Ramas Somborio, RN, MAN, gave some important keynotes about eating right foods specially every breakfast. He even encouraged the participants to eat leafy vegetables and foods rich in fiber.

Dr. Rhodhora F. Cabunillas, MD, an Internist-Diabetologist, also shared information about diabetes and answered commonly asked questions about the disease.

Also, highlighted in the event are the different free services offered for all diabetic patients. It includes free blood pressure check up, sugar count test, health consultation, ECG and FBS screening.

The event was also graced by Acting City Administrator Abe P. Gillaco, who attended in behalf of City Mayor Azucena P. Huervas, members of the Valencia Medical Center, and other affiliated organizations.
